Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Giant
A legend from Ireland
-
Story
Finn has an argument with Benandonner, a giant who lives across the Irish Sea in Scotland. The two giants throw rocks at each other, finally creating a causeway. When Benandonner makes his way across the giants’ causeway to fight Finn, Finn runs home and asks his wife Oonagh for help. Oonagh hides Finn. She plays a number of tricks to convince Benandonner that Finn is bigger and stronger than he actually is. Benandonner decides that Finn McCool is a giant he doesn’t want to mess with and runs off back across the Irish Sea

Why we chose it
A great story about giants found in one of the great cycles of Irish folk stories. The tricks played by Finn and his wife to deceive the other giant will entertain children and there is plenty of humour in the story.
