How Firouz tricked the Elephant King

A story from Ancient India which was translated and adapted into Arabic and was one of the tales in the Kalila wa Dimna.

  • Story

A herd of elephants live by a lake in the middle of a forest. When the lake dries up the elephants must find a new home. To reach the new lake they must pass a colony of rabbits, but as they march through the colony they crush the homes of the rabbits. One of the rabbits, Firouz, comes up with a clever plan. She shows the Elephant King the reflection of the moon in the water and convinces him that the lake is protected by an almighty spirit. Through her quick thinking and cunning, Firouz saves her fellow rabbits' homes without using force.

  • Why we chose it

A great 'small is big' story with a trickster rabbit.
