Story
Edna Gristle and her family have been summoned by Grandfather Ignatius to his manor, Grimacres. At dinner, Ignatius makes a shocking announcement and only a few hours later, Edna finds him dead in his study. With a snowstorm raging outside the family can’t contact the police, but Edna wants to be a detective and is secretly thrilled to have a mystery to solve. With the help of her friend, Archie, and her tortoise, Charles Darwin, she gathers the evidence and draws her conclusions.

Why we chose it
Smith has created an incredible cast of quirky characters and Edna is such a fabulous human being who is unafraid to just be herself. A great example of a locked-room mystery. Funny, vividly described and a very satisfactory conclusion.

When Edna's horrible grandfather meets a grisly end at the family manor on the eve of his 90th birthday (and his wedding), everyone in the family is a suspect. Trapped by a snowstorm, no one can leave and no one is coming to help. From an accidental hunt for her pet tortoise, to listening in behind the curtains during interviews, Edna discovers herself finding out family lore and most importantly solving the murder with the help of her tortoise (Charles Darwin) and her friend Archie.
