Story
Set in the future where a climate catastrophe from pollution nicknamed The Reek has made all earth’s air toxic. Everyone has to pay for technology to filter their oxygen. Young Sparrow works to support herself and her family delivering parcels across a futuristic Edinburgh using hover skates. But when her eccentric inventor friend Miriam discovers a new, better way to survive, Sparrow finds both their lives in danger from people who don’t want the rest of the world to find out.

Why we chose it
The concerns, with pollution and the growing gap between rich and poor feel very relevant and link to today’s most important concerns. The future world Chisholm creates feels very realistic, with believably flawed technology and characters finding ways around it.
