Story
When Astrid goes to see her first roller derby she decides that this is the activity for her! She is convinced that her best friend Nicole will come with her, but Nicole would rather go to ballet camp instead. Astrid takes on roller derby anyway, but this marks a growing apart for the girls. The struggle of taking on a new sport makes Astrid begins to doubt herself, but ultimately she makes new friendships and learns that sometimes we can remain friends with people despite our differences.

Why we chose it
An excellent example of a real word comic with a strong female protagonist at the helm. The characters are all very believable, and the trials of the transition from child to teenager are accurately conveyed.

Roller Girl, by Victoria Jamieson, is a very good book. It’s a story about a girl who goes through challenges like friendship and self-belief to get to where she wants to be. You find yourself caring about her, and when she reaches her goals, you find yourself celebrating with her. I recommend this book to 10+ who really want to care about a character.
