  • Story

A traveller and his son arrive at a village with nothing to eat and nowhere to stay. They take a stone to the house of a kind old lady and ask if she would like them to cook some stone soup for her. She agrees, and the traveller boils a bowl of water with the stone inside. As it boils, they ask the old lady to add more and more ingredients until they have made a delicious soup! The old lady enjoys it so much that she buys the stone from them so that she can make it again, and the traveller and his son can now afford a place to sleep for the night.

  • Why we chose it

A story as versatile as the ingredients of the soup. It can be told as a wily trickster story or a warm story of a community coming together over a hot bowl of stone soup.
