The Four Dragons

Once there were no rivers or lakes in China, just one big sea where four dragons lived – the Black Dragon, the Pearl Dragon, the Yellow Dragon and the Long Dragon. The dragons noticed that the people had no water and asked the Jade Emperor to give them some. The Jade Emperor did nothing so the dragons filled their mouths with water and sprayed the land until the people had enough. The emperor was angry and imprisoned the dragons under a mountain. The dragons turned themselves into rivers so that the people would always have water.
And that is how the four great rivers of China were created –The Heilongjian (heylung geean - Black river) in the far north, the Huanghe (Hooang he - Yellow river) in the north, the Changjiang (chang geeah- Yangtze or Long RIver) in the centre and the Zhujiang (jzhaygang - Pearl River) in the south.
