Where it came from

Andrew Stanton conceived WALL-E during a lunch with fellow writers in 1994. Stanton had the Robinson Crusoe style idea of a lonely robot on a deserted island. Stanton started writing WALL-E again in 2002 while completing Finding Nemo. The script was similar to the script of the film Alien (1979). The film also acknowledges a debt to R2-D2.

Where it went next

Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) built robot model WALL-Es to promote the film, which appeared in various places, including the Disneyland Resort, the Franklin Institute and the Miami Science Museum. The film won many awards including the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Associated stories

WALL-E was paired with a short film titled Presto for its release in cinemas. Presto is about a magician trying to perform a show with his uncooperative rabbit. It was directed by Doug Sweetland and was nominated for an Annie Award and Academy Award.
