Exploring the Story

What Happened To You

Where It Came From:
James Catchpole, who was disabled as a child, wrote this story for his younger self and for other disabled children. It grew from his lifelong experience of being asked “What happened to you?” and his desire to offer a narrative that validates disabled children’s experiences while guiding adults and peers in how to respond sensitively.

Where It Went Next:
The story inspired a sequel, You’re SO Amazing, co-written with his wife Lucy Catchpole and published in 2023, continuing the themes of celebration, difference, and self-expression for young readers.

Associated Stories:
James Catchpole, along with Lucy Catchpole, runs The Catchpole Agency representing authors and illustrators of children’s books, non-fiction, and novels. His other works include Going Viral (illustrated by Jennifer Latham-Robinson, 2024) and the sequel You’re SO Amazing, which further explore childhood experiences with humor, heart, and insight.
