Where it came from

The story of Mega Robo Bros first burst onto the scene in the Oxford-based weekly children’s comic The Phoenix, where readers met Alex and Freddy – two squabbling brothers who just happen to be super-powered robots living in a futuristic London. The comic’s fast-paced mix of sibling rivalry, school life and robot-smashing adventures quickly made it a hit, and the episodes were later collected and published as graphic novels by David Fickling Books. 

At heart, the story blends everyday family chaos with epic science-fiction danger: bullies, homework and evil robots all collide in one gleeful adventure. 

Where it went next

After its debut, Mega Robo Bros powered up into a full graphic-novel series, with multiple sequels following Alex and Freddy as they face ever bigger robotic threats and bigger questions about growing up. The first book (2016) was shortlisted for the British Comic Awards and won the Excelsior Award Jr in 2017.

Neill Cameron has filled The Phoenix with many other imaginative adventures. Related works include Mo-Bot High, the fantasy graphic novels Tamsin and the Deep and Tamsin and the Dark (with Kate Brown), and the swashbuckling series The Pirates of Pangaea (with Daniel Hartwell). He has also created guides to help young creators draw their own comics, inspiring the next generation of storytellers and the hugely successful Donut Squad series.
